What is Change Word?

Change Word is a word ladder puzzle. You start with one word and must reach a goal word of the same length by changing exactly one letter at a time, where every intermediate step has to be a valid word. Turning COLD into WARM, for example, can go COLD, CORD, CARD, WARD, WARM.

Change Word by AIFreeForever

Change Word by AIFreeForever is a free browser word ladder puzzle you can play instantly on any device. It gives you a start word and a goal word, and you transform one into the other by changing a single letter at a time, with every step needing to be a real word. It tracks your steps against par, offers hints and undo, and saves your best solution.

On AIFreeForever you tap a letter tile to select a position, then tap a keyboard letter to change it, and if the result is a real word it becomes the next rung on your ladder. The game shows par, the fewest steps possible, tracks how many steps you have taken, and lets you undo a move or grab a hint that points to the next letter to change.

What AIFreeForever likes most about Change Word is that it is pure lateral thinking. There is always more than one route to the goal, so you are hunting for the shortest chain of real words, and beating par feels genuinely clever. Your best solution for each puzzle is saved so there is always a score to improve.

How to Solve Word Ladders in Fewer Steps

Work from both ends at once. Look at the goal word and think about which words are one letter away from it, then try to bridge toward those from your start word. Meeting in the middle usually finds a shorter path than pushing blindly from the start.

Change the letters that already match the goal last. If your start and goal share letters in the same position, keep those in place and focus your changes on the positions that differ, which avoids wandering away from the target.

Use the hint when you are truly stuck, since it reveals the next letter on an optimal path, and use undo freely to back out of a dead end. Beating par means finding the shortest chain, so it is worth rethinking a move rather than forcing a longer route.

What are the rules?

Change exactly one letter at a time, keep the word the same length, and make sure every step is a real word until you reach the goal.

What does par mean?

Par is the fewest steps possible for that puzzle, found by a shortest-path search. Matching par means you solved it as efficiently as possible.

What if my word is rejected?

The step must be a real word in the game dictionary and differ by exactly one letter from the current word. If it is not recognized, the row shakes and the change is undone.

Can I use my keyboard?

Yes. Use arrow keys to pick a letter position, type a letter to change it, press Backspace to undo, and Enter to move on after you solve a puzzle.

History of Change Word

The word ladder puzzle was invented by Lewis Carroll, author of Alice in Wonderland, who called it Doublets and published it in Vanity Fair magazine in 1879.

Carroll set the classic challenge of turning one word into another a single letter at a time, such as changing HEAD into TAIL, and readers competed to find the shortest chains.

Word ladders became a favorite of puzzle books and later a classic computer science exercise, because finding the shortest chain is a perfect example of a shortest-path search through a graph of words.

Types of Change Word

Classic Doublet

Classic Doublet is the version AIFreeForever built, following Lewis Carroll rules where you change one letter per step and every rung must be a real word.

Shortest Path Challenge

Shortest Path Challenge scores you against par, the minimum number of steps, so the goal is not just to finish but to find the most efficient chain.

Add or Remove Letter

Add or Remove Letter loosens the rules so you can also insert or delete a letter, which connects words of different lengths and opens up new routes.

Timed Ladder

Timed Ladder puts a clock on the puzzle so you must build your chain quickly, rewarding fast word recall over careful optimizing.

Themed Ladders

Themed Ladders pick start and goal words that relate, like COLD to WARM or LOVE to HATE, so the transformation tells a little story.

What Makes Our Change Word Game Fun?

This is a brain workout disguised as a game, because turning COLD into WARM on AIFreeForever means finding a chain of real words like CORD, CARD and WARD, one letter at a time, so every move is a tiny puzzle of its own.

A par score shows the shortest possible solution, a hint nudges you toward the next letter, undo lets you rethink a move, and your best solution for each puzzle is saved so you can come back and beat it.

How to Play Change Word

1

See the goal

The start word sits at the top of the ladder and the goal word is shown above it. Both are the same length.

2

Select a letter

Tap a letter tile in your current word, or use the arrow keys, to choose which position to change.

3

Change one letter

Tap a keyboard letter. If the new word is real and one letter different, it becomes the next rung on the ladder.

4

Reach the goal

Keep changing letters until you spell the goal word. Try to match par, and use undo or a hint whenever you get stuck.

Tips & Strategy

Work from both the start and the goal at once, and try to meet in the middle for a shorter chain.

Keep letters that already match the goal, and change only the positions that differ.

Use undo freely to back out of a dead end rather than forcing a longer route.

Save the hint for when you are truly stuck, since it reveals the next letter on an optimal path.

Fun Facts About Change Word

💡

Lewis Carroll invented the word ladder in 1879 and called it Doublets.

💡

His most famous example turns HEAD into TAIL one letter at a time.

💡

A word ladder is really a shortest-path problem on a graph of words.

💡

There is almost always more than one route to the goal, but only some match par.

💡

Word ladders are a classic exercise for teaching breadth-first search in computer science.

Lewis Carroll and the Original Word Ladder

Change Word is a modern take on Doublets, the puzzle Lewis Carroll invented in 1879. He challenged readers to turn one word into another by changing a single letter at a time, and famously used the example of turning HEAD into TAIL.

More than a century later the puzzle still delights because it blends vocabulary with logic. You are not just recalling words, you are plotting a route through them, which is exactly what makes it feel like a real brain teaser.

A Puzzle That Is Really a Shortest Path

Under the hood, a word ladder is a graph where each word is a node and two words are connected if they differ by one letter. Finding the fewest steps between start and goal is a classic breadth-first search problem, which is why the game can always tell you the par and offer a perfect hint.

Playing Change Word gives you an intuitive feel for that idea. As you learn to work from both ends and prune dead branches, you are doing by hand what a shortest-path algorithm does automatically, which is a fun way to think like a computer.
