Gemini 3.1 is Google's fast tier, and the thing it does that the others struggle with is length. Its context window runs to roughly a million tokens, which is a different kind of number: not a long chapter but a whole book, not a report but the year's worth of them. Getting a useful answer out of a large document

Ask for the evidence, not just the answer

"Summarise this" gets you a summary you then have to verify. "List the three clauses that limit my liability, and quote each one" gets you something you can check in ten seconds. Always ask it to point at where it found the answer.

One question at a time, then follow up

The document stays in the conversation. Ask your second question without pasting anything again, and your third, and your tenth. That is where the long window pays off.

Ask what is missing

Models are good at answering and bad at volunteering. "What would you expect to see in a document like this that is not here?" often finds more than the summary did.

Make it disagree with itself

After the answer, ask for the strongest case against it. If the second answer quietly demolishes the first, you have learned something before acting on it.

Can it be wrong about a long document?

Yes, and in a particular way worth knowing about. A model reading a hundred pages can miss something in the middle, and it will still answer with confidence. This is why asking for quotes matters: a quote is checkable and a summary is not. For anything that carries a legal or financial consequence, treat the answer as a fast first pass by a careful reader who is occasionally mistaken.
