Grok 4 is xAI's reasoning model, released in 2025 and built around the idea that a model should think before it speaks. Ask it something hard and it works through the problem rather than reaching for the first plausible sentence. It reads images as well as text. On this page it is free, with no X account, no subscription and nothing to sign up for.

What a reasoning model is for

There is a real difference between a model that answers and a model that reasons, and it shows up on exactly the questions where being wrong costs you something. A fast model pattern-matches your question to the answers it has seen. A reasoning model takes the problem apart first. On easy questions you cannot tell them apart. On hard ones you can.

Can I use Grok without an X account?

Not on xAI's own surfaces. grok.com and the Grok inside X both want you signed in, and the better tiers want a paid X subscription. The API wants an account, a key and a balance.

Grok 4 or GPT 5

Two reasoning models with different habits. GPT 5 is more careful about hedging and more likely to tell you a question is underspecified. Grok 4 is more willing to commit to an answer and argue for it. On a question with a right answer they mostly agree; on a question of judgement they are worth reading side by side, which the model bar makes easy.

Grok 4 or DeepSeek V4

For pure code and mathematics, DeepSeek V4 is the specialist and its weights are open. Grok 4 is the generalist that reasons about anything, including things with no code in them at all, and it can look at a picture.

Getting the most out of it

Ask for the working

"Show your reasoning" is not a magic phrase but it does change the shape of the answer, and a visible chain of steps is one you can check. If step four is wrong you can say so and get a corrected answer instead of a second guess.

Give it something to push against

"Here is my plan, find the hole in it" gets a better answer than "what do you think of my plan". Models are agreeable by default. Ask for the objection explicitly.

Say what you have already ruled out

If you have tried three fixes, list them. Otherwise the first suggestion will be one of the three, and you will spend a turn explaining that.

Let it be slow

On a genuinely hard question the answer takes longer to start. That is the model doing the thing you came here for.

Is it always right?

No. A model that reasons out loud is easier to catch when it is wrong, which is not the same as being right more often about facts. Its knowledge has a cutoff and it does not browse, so anything recent needs to be given to it rather than recalled. The chain of steps is the useful part: read it, and when a step does not follow, say so.
