How to Measure Your Ring Size at Home
The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) recommends measuring at the end of the day when fingers are at their largest, and taking multiple measurements for accuracy. The three methods below cover every common situation.
Method 1 — Measure an existing ring
- Place a well-fitting ring flat on a ruler.
- Measure the inner diameter straight across the widest point in millimetres.
- Match the diameter to the Inner Diameter mm column in the chart above.
Method 2 — String or paper strip
- Cut a thin strip of paper approximately 10 cm long.
- Wrap it snugly around the base of the finger — not the knuckle.
- Mark where the ends meet and measure the length in millimetres.
- That length is your inner circumference — match it to the circumference column in the chart above.
Method 3 — Printable ring sizer
- Download and print the ring sizer PDF at exactly 100 percent scale — do not scale to fit the page.
- Cut out the strip, wrap around your finger, and read the size printed on the strip.
Ring Buying and Sizing Tips
- ✓Wide band rings 6 mm or wider sit tighter on the finger — order half a size up.
- ✓If your knuckle is significantly wider than the finger base, size to fit over the knuckle and use a ring adjuster to close the gap at the base.
- ✓Sterling silver and gold rings can be resized by a jeweller. Tungsten and titanium rings cannot be resized and must be replaced.
- ✓Most reputable jewellers offer free resizing within two sizes — confirm this before purchasing online. Jewelers of America recommends verifying the resizing policy in writing before any ring purchase.
- ✓Eternity rings and fully-set pave rings cannot be resized — get the measurement exactly right before ordering.
