How to Measure Your Foot at Home
- Place a blank sheet of paper on a hard flat floor. Stand on it barefoot with your full body weight distributed evenly.
- Hold a pencil vertically, not angled inward, and trace carefully around the entire outline of your foot.
- Use a ruler to measure the longest distance from the back of your heel to the tip of your longest toe. Record this in centimetres.
- Measure the widest point across the ball of your foot. This gives you your width measurement.
- Measure both feet and use the measurement from the larger foot. The majority of people have one foot that is slightly bigger than the other.
Shoe Width Chart
Shoe width codes indicate how much room there is across the ball of the foot and vary between brands and regions.
| Width Code | Width Name | Who It Is Suited For |
|---|---|---|
| N or AA | Narrow | Suited for slim feet with a narrow ball width. |
| B (women) / D (men) | Medium / Standard | The most common width found in most off-the-shelf shoes. |
| W or E | Wide | Suited for feet with extra width across the ball or high instep. |
| XW or EE | Extra Wide | Suited for very wide feet or those with conditions such as bunions or swelling. |
| EEEE or 4E | Ultra Wide | Specialist medical or comfort footwear width. |
Running Shoe Sizing Guide
Running shoes are sized differently from casual footwear because the foot swells during exercise and needs extra space at the toe box.
- Go up half a size from your regular shoe size when buying running shoes. Most podiatrists and running specialists recommend this to accommodate foot swelling during a run.
- Leave a thumbnail's width (approximately 10 to 12 mm) between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. Your longest toe may not be your big toe.
- Try on running shoes in the afternoon or after a short walk when your feet are at their largest.
- If you are between sizes always go with the larger size. A shoe that is slightly too long is more comfortable than one that is too short.
- When in doubt visit a specialist running store where staff can assess your gait and foot shape and recommend the correct fit.
