How to Measure for Bike Size

1
Measure your inseam Stand barefoot against a wall with feet 6 inches apart. Place a large hardcover book level between your legs at crotch height (simulating a saddle) and measure from the floor to the top of the book in centimetres.
2
For road bikes — multiply inseam by 0.70 Multiply your inseam by 0.70 to estimate ideal saddle height from the bottom bracket centre to the top of the saddle. This guides frame size selection.
3
For mountain bikes — multiply inseam by 0.66 Multiply your inseam by 0.66 to estimate saddle height. Mountain bikes use a lower position for more aggressive technical riding.
4
Check standover clearance When standing over the top tube flat-footed you should have at least 1 to 2 inches clearance for road bikes and 2 to 4 inches for mountain bikes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size bike do I need for my height?
Use the height charts above to find the recommended frame size for your height. Height is a good starting estimate — but inseam measurement provides a more accurate fit, especially for riders who are tall with shorter legs or short with longer legs.
What mountain bike size for a 6-foot person?
A 6-foot rider typically fits a Large frame (21 to 22 inches) in mountain bikes. Verify by checking standover clearance and reach to the handlebars — different brand geometries can vary by one size.
What is the difference between 27.5 and 29-inch wheels?
A 29-inch wheel rolls over obstacles more easily and maintains speed better on rolling terrain. A 27.5-inch wheel is lighter, more agile, and more suitable for technical terrain and shorter riders who find 29-inch wheels unwieldy.
How do I measure bike frame size?
Road bike frame size is measured from the centre of the bottom bracket (the axle hole at the bottom of the frame) to the top of the seat tube in centimetres. Mountain bike frame size uses the same measurement but is typically expressed in inches.
What age is a 20-inch bike for?
A 20-inch wheel bike is generally suitable for children aged 5 to 8 with a height of approximately 44 to 52 inches. It is the standard size for teaching gears and hand brakes.
Can a bike be too big for me?
Yes — a frame that is too large causes you to overreach to the handlebars straining your back and reducing control. The standover height should give at least 1 inch of clearance when straddling the top tube flat-footed.
Is a balance bike better than a bike with training wheels?
Research and cycling educators strongly favour balance bikes over training wheels for children aged 2 to 4. Balance bikes develop the core skill of balancing directly — children who learn on balance bikes typically transition to pedal bikes much faster and more confidently than those who used training wheels.
What is the most popular mountain bike wheel size?
29-inch wheels have become the dominant choice for cross-country and trail mountain biking among adult riders. They offer better traction, rollover capability, and speed efficiency on most terrain compared to 27.5-inch wheels.
