Each US half-size step corresponds to approximately 0.051 inches of additional inner circumference, or about 0.016 inches of additional diameter. The conversion is calculated by taking the standard millimeter measurement for each size and dividing by 25.4 (the number of millimeters per inch).

Converting Inches to Ring Size

How to Measure Ring Size in Inches

String Method with Inch Ruler

Cut a thin strip of paper or a length of string approximately 6 inches long. Wrap it snugly around the base of the finger you want to measure — not the knuckle, but the base where the ring will sit. Mark or pinch the point where the paper or string overlaps to complete a full circle. Lay it flat next to an inch ruler and measure the length from the starting end to your mark. This length is the inner circumference of the ring you need in inches. Use the chart above to find the matching US ring size. For example, a circumference of 2.142 inches corresponds to US size 7.

For the most accurate result, measure at the end of the day when fingers are slightly larger, avoid measuring in cold temperatures, and wrap snugly but not tightly. If your knuckle is significantly larger than the base of your finger, measure both and choose a size that slides over the knuckle comfortably. Measuring an Existing Ring in Inches

If you have a ring that fits the correct finger, place it flat on a surface and measure the inner diameter across the widest point of the inside of the ring with an inch ruler or digital calipers. This diameter measurement in inches corresponds to the "Diameter (inches)" column in the chart above. For example, an inner diameter of 0.681 inches corresponds to US size 7. Digital calipers are the most accurate tool for this measurement, as they can measure to thousandths of an inch. A standard inch ruler works well but is limited to about 1/32 of an inch precision, which is adequate for most ring sizing purposes.

Alternatively, place the ring on a piece of paper and carefully trace the inner circle. Use a ruler to measure the diameter of the traced circle in inches. This method is slightly less accurate than direct measurement but is useful when calipers are not available. Ring Size to Inches Examples

Example 1 - US Size 8 to Inches

US ring size 8 is a common men's ring size and a larger women's ring size. To find size 8 in inches: the inner diameter of a US size 8 ring is 0.717 inches (18.2 mm) and the inner circumference is 2.244 inches (57.0 mm). If you are ordering a custom ring and the maker asks for the inner diameter in inches, you would specify 0.717 inches for a size 8. Example 2 - 2.5 Inch Circumference to Ring Size

If you measured your finger circumference as 2.5 inches using a string and inch ruler, enter 2.5 in the "Inches to Size" mode and select "Circumference." Converting 2.5 inches to millimeters gives 63.5 mm. The closest US ring size to a circumference of 63.5 mm is US size 10.5, which has a circumference of 63.4 mm (2.496 inches).
