Ring Size to Inches Converter
Ring sizes are usually expressed in numbers, but the actual measurement is based on the inner diameter and circumference in inches or millimeters. Use the converter on the left to instantly find any US ring size in inches — or enter an inch measurement to find the matching ring size. US size 7 is 0.681 inches in diameter and 2.142 inches in circumference.
What Is a Ring Size to Inches Converter?
A ring size to inches converter translates US ring size numbers into inch measurements of the ring's inner diameter and circumference. Ring sizes in the US system are assigned numbers (3 through 15 in half increments) that correspond to specific inner circumference measurements, originally based on millimeters but often needed in inches when using inch rulers, calipers, or US-standard measuring tools.
You need this converter when measuring a ring with an inch ruler, when ordering custom rings from makers who specify sizes in inches, when using a printable ring sizer measured in inches, or when you have measured your finger circumference in inches using a string and ruler. You can also use it in reverse: enter your inch measurement to find the nearest US ring size. For millimeter measurements, see our ring size to mm converter.
How the Ring Size to Inches Converter Works
Converting Ring Size to Inches
Select "Size to Inches" in the converter, choose your US ring size from the dropdown, and the tool instantly returns the inner diameter and circumference of that ring size in inches alongside the equivalent millimeter measurements. Each US half-size step corresponds to approximately 0.051 inches of additional inner circumference, or about 0.016 inches of additional diameter. The conversion is calculated by taking the standard millimeter measurement for each size and dividing by 25.4 (the number of millimeters per inch).
Converting Inches to Ring Size
Switch the direction to "Inches to Size," enter your inch measurement, and select whether it is a circumference or diameter measurement. The tool converts your inch value to millimeters, then finds the closest US ring size in the standard lookup table. Circumference is the more commonly measured value (the length around the inside of the ring), while diameter is the straight-line measurement across the inside of the ring. If you measured around your finger with a string, that measurement is the circumference. If you measured across the inside of an existing ring with a ruler, that is the diameter.

How to Measure Ring Size in Inches
String Method with Inch Ruler
Cut a thin strip of paper or a length of string approximately 6 inches long. Wrap it snugly around the base of the finger you want to measure — not the knuckle, but the base where the ring will sit. Mark or pinch the point where the paper or string overlaps to complete a full circle. Lay it flat next to an inch ruler and measure the length from the starting end to your mark. This length is the inner circumference of the ring you need in inches. Use the chart above to find the matching US ring size. For example, a circumference of 2.142 inches corresponds to US size 7.
For the most accurate result, measure at the end of the day when fingers are slightly larger, avoid measuring in cold temperatures, and wrap snugly but not tightly. If your knuckle is significantly larger than the base of your finger, measure both and choose a size that slides over the knuckle comfortably. Compare with our US to UK ring size converter if you also need the UK letter equivalent.
Measuring an Existing Ring in Inches
If you have a ring that fits the correct finger, place it flat on a surface and measure the inner diameter across the widest point of the inside of the ring with an inch ruler or digital calipers. This diameter measurement in inches corresponds to the "Diameter (inches)" column in the chart above. For example, an inner diameter of 0.681 inches corresponds to US size 7. Digital calipers are the most accurate tool for this measurement, as they can measure to thousandths of an inch. A standard inch ruler works well but is limited to about 1/32 of an inch precision, which is adequate for most ring sizing purposes.
Alternatively, place the ring on a piece of paper and carefully trace the inner circle. Use a ruler to measure the diameter of the traced circle in inches. This method is slightly less accurate than direct measurement but is useful when calipers are not available. Once you have the diameter in inches, enter it into the "Inches to Size" mode of the converter above and select "Diameter" to find your US ring size.
Ring Size to Inches Examples
Example 1 - US Size 8 to Inches
US ring size 8 is a common men's ring size and a larger women's ring size. To find size 8 in inches: the inner diameter of a US size 8 ring is 0.717 inches (18.2 mm) and the inner circumference is 2.244 inches (57.0 mm). If you are ordering a custom ring and the maker asks for the inner diameter in inches, you would specify 0.717 inches for a size 8. If you measured your finger circumference with a string and got 2.244 inches, you would order a US size 8. This is also the equivalent of UK size P and EU size 57. For a full international comparison, see the international ring size converter.
Example 2 - 2.5 Inch Circumference to Ring Size
If you measured your finger circumference as 2.5 inches using a string and inch ruler, enter 2.5 in the "Inches to Size" mode and select "Circumference." Converting 2.5 inches to millimeters gives 63.5 mm. The closest US ring size to a circumference of 63.5 mm is US size 10.5, which has a circumference of 63.4 mm (2.496 inches). The inner diameter for US size 10.5 is 20.2 mm or 0.795 inches. If 2.5 inches falls between two sizes, it is advisable to choose the larger size (US 10.5 in this case) for comfortable daily wear.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is ring size 7 in inches?
US ring size 7 has an inner diameter of 0.681 inches and an inner circumference of 2.142 inches. In millimeters, this is 17.3 mm diameter and 54.4 mm circumference. Size 7 is the most commonly cited average US women's ring size.
How many inches is a size 10 ring?
US ring size 10 has an inner diameter of 0.780 inches and an inner circumference of 2.445 inches. In millimeters, this is 19.8 mm diameter and 62.1 mm circumference. Size 10 is a common US men's ring size.
How do I measure my ring in inches?
Wrap a thin strip of paper around your finger and mark where it overlaps. Lay it flat next to an inch ruler and measure the length — this is your circumference in inches. Alternatively, use a ruler or calipers to measure the inner diameter of an existing ring in inches. Use the converter above to match your inch measurement to a US ring size.
Is ring size the diameter or circumference?
The US ring size number technically derives from the inner circumference, but both the diameter and circumference are useful measurements. When measuring an existing ring with a ruler across the inside, you are measuring the diameter. When wrapping a string around your finger, you are measuring the circumference. Both measurements can be used to find your ring size — just make sure to select the correct measurement type in the converter.
Can I use a ruler to find my ring size?
Yes. If you have an existing ring that fits correctly, place it flat and measure the inner diameter straight across the inside using a ruler in inches. Match this measurement to the Diameter (inches) column in the chart above to find your US ring size. For best accuracy, digital calipers are recommended, but a standard inch ruler accurate to 1/32 inch is sufficient for most purposes.
