Why does this differ from the 2020 Census count?
The census is a full count taken every ten years, most recently on April 1, 2020. The figures here are Census Bureau estimates for July 1, 2025, which update the 2020 count each year using births, deaths and migration.
How often is this list updated?
We rebuild the ranking every May when new city population estimates are released, and check the page monthly for corrections in between.
How we compiled this ranking
We take the Census Bureau's July 1, 2025 population estimate for every incorporated city and town in the 50 states and Washington, DC, and keep the 50 largest. Puerto Rico is left out so the list compares US states only.
Each place is ranked by its total resident population inside official city limits. Suburbs and the wider metro area are not added in, which is why a city like Atlanta or Miami ranks lower here than its regional size suggests.
City names are cleaned so they read the way people search for them. "New York city" becomes New York, and consolidated city-counties such as Nashville-Davidson and Louisville/Jefferson County are listed under their common city name.
Change since 2020 compares each city's 2025 estimate with its April 2020 census base. Median age, household income and home value are added from the Census Bureau's American Community Survey, averaged over 2020–2024 and shown in 2024 dollars, because the yearly estimates count people only.
How often this page is updated
City population estimates are published once a year, usually in May. Survey figures for age, income and home value are released separately, usually in December or January. When either comes out we rebuild the ranking, recheck every city name and update the summary figures on this page. Between releases we check the page monthly for corrections.
