How we compiled this ranking

We take every city, town and census-designated place with at least 100,000 residents and rank them by median household income, the point where half of households earn more and half earn less.

The size cut-off keeps very small, wealthy enclaves from crowding out real cities.

How often this page is updated

Survey estimates are released once a year, usually in December or January. We rebuild this ranking when they come out and check the page monthly in between.
