Blackjack Basic Rules Reference

  • The goal — beat the dealer by getting closer to 21 without going over (busting). Blackjack (an Ace plus a 10-value card on the first two cards) pays 3 to 2 in standard games.
  • Card values — Number cards are worth face value. Face cards (J, Q, K) are worth 10. Aces are worth 1 or 11 — whichever is more favourable without busting.
  • Dealer rules — the dealer must hit on soft 16 or below and stand on hard 17 or above. In S17 games (dealer Stands on Soft 17) the house edge is slightly lower than H17 games.
  • Never take insurance — insurance is a side bet offered when the dealer shows an Ace. It pays 2 to 1 but the house edge on insurance is over 7 percent — far worse than the main game.
  • Table variations that matter — 6 to 5 blackjack payouts (instead of 3 to 2) increase the house edge by approximately 1.4 percent. Always find tables that pay 3 to 2 for blackjack.

Frequently Asked Questions

Basic strategy is the mathematically optimal decision (hit, stand, double, split, or surrender) for every combination of your hand and the dealer's upcard. Following basic strategy precisely reduces the house edge to approximately 0.5 percent in a standard multi-deck game.
Yes — always split aces. Splitting aces gives you two chances to start a hand with an 11, which is the strongest starting position in blackjack.
No — never split 10s under basic strategy. A total of 20 wins approximately 77 percent of the time against any dealer upcard — splitting breaks up one of the strongest hands in the game.
The most favourable doubling situations are hard 11 (always double except against a dealer Ace in most rules), hard 10 (double against dealer 2 through 9), and hard 9 (double against dealer 3 through 6). Soft hands like soft 13 through soft 17 can also be doubled against weak dealer upcards as shown in the table above.
A dealer upcard of 6 is the weakest dealer position — the dealer is most likely to bust with a 6 showing (bust probability approximately 42 percent). This is why basic strategy calls for standing on more hands and doubling more aggressively when the dealer shows 4, 5, or 6.
With perfect basic strategy the house edge in a standard multi-deck blackjack game with S17 rules is approximately 0.5 percent. The house edge rises significantly with poor decisions — the average blackjack player faces a house edge of 1 to 2 percent due to strategy errors.
Card counting is not illegal — it is a mental skill that gives players a mathematical edge. However casinos are private property and reserve the right to ban players they suspect of counting cards.
A hard hand contains no Ace or contains an Ace that counts only as 1 (because counting it as 11 would bust the hand). A soft hand contains an Ace that can be counted as either 1 or 11 without busting — for example Ace-6 is a soft 17.
