Dosing Frequency and Safety Rules

Give acetaminophen every 4 to 6 hours as needed. Never give more than 5 doses in any 24-hour period.

Check the concentration on the bottle before measuring. Infants' Drops (160 mg per 5 mL) is the standard concentration. Older liquid formulas used 80 mg per 2.5 mL — confirm the label to avoid dosing errors.

Use only the dosing syringe or measuring cup that comes with the product. Kitchen spoons are not accurate measuring tools.

Do not give other products containing acetaminophen at the same time — many cold and flu medicines, sleep aids, and combination products contain acetaminophen. Check all labels.

Call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222 in the US) immediately if you think your child may have received too much acetaminophen. Overdose can cause liver damage even without obvious symptoms.
