Frequently Asked Questions
What is a fraction?
A fraction represents a part of a whole — it has a numerator (the top number showing how many parts are taken) and a denominator (the bottom number showing how many equal parts the whole is divided into). For example 3/4 means 3 parts out of a whole divided into 4 equal parts.
What are equivalent fractions?
Equivalent fractions represent the same value expressed with different numerators and denominators. 1/2, 2/4, and 4/8 are all equivalent because they all equal exactly one half of a whole.
How do you simplify a fraction?
To simplify a fraction divide both the numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor (GCF). For example 6/8 — the GCF of 6 and 8 is 2, so divide both by 2 to get 3/4.
What is a proper vs improper fraction?
A proper fraction has a numerator smaller than its denominator (3/4) and represents less than one whole. An improper fraction has a numerator equal to or larger than its denominator (5/4 or 4/4) and represents one whole or more.
What is a mixed number?
A mixed number combines a whole number and a proper fraction — for example 2 3/4. The improper fraction equivalent of 2 3/4 is 11/4 (2 × 4 + 3 = 11, over the denominator 4).
How do you add fractions with different denominators?
Find the least common denominator (LCD) — the smallest number both denominators divide into evenly. Convert each fraction to the LCD by multiplying numerator and denominator by the required factor, then add the numerators.
What is 1/3 as a decimal?
1/3 equals 0.333... (0.3 repeating) as a decimal. It is a repeating decimal because 3 does not divide evenly into 10 — the remainder cycles.
What fraction is 0.75?
0.75 equals 3/4. Multiply 0.75 by 4 to get 3 — or recognise that 75 hundredths equals 75/100 which simplifies by dividing both by 25 to give 3/4.
